The basics
Which makes do you work on?
Volkswagen, Porsche, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Lamborghini and Bentley — from aircooled classics through the current model year. Our technicians are factory-trained and certified on these marques, so recommendations come from manufacturer-specific knowledge rather than general repair practice.
Where are you located and what are your hours?
We are at 15570 SE Stark St, Portland, OR 97233, in a converted church we have worked out of since 1978. Open Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:30pm, closed weekends. We are right on the Portland–Gresham line, roughly fifteen minutes from most of the east metro.
Do you charge for estimates?
No. Estimates are free. Tell us about the vehicle and the symptoms and we will give you an honest assessment before any work begins.
Do I need an appointment?
Yes, we work by appointment. You can request one online or call the shop at (503) 253-4621 and we will find a time.
How long have you been in business?
Since 1978. Same shop, same building on SE Stark Street, working on German cars for forty-eight years.
Bringing your car in
What happens on my first visit?
We start with a conversation about the car's history, what it is doing now, and what records you have. A full inspection follows so we can see what is actually worn, then we go through the findings with you and prioritise the work. Nothing gets repaired until you approve it, and you will know the cost before we start.
My check engine light is on. What does that cost to diagnose?
We quote diagnosis before we begin. A light is a starting point rather than an answer, so we would rather spend the time finding the cause than replace parts that turn out to be fine. Call and describe what the car is doing and we will tell you what it takes to find out.
When should I stop driving and call you?
Unusual engine noises, oil leaks, overheating, a sudden change in how the car handles or brakes, or a noticeable drop in performance are all worth a call before they turn into something larger. If you are unsure whether it can wait, ask — we will tell you straight.
Do you work on cars that have been to other shops?
Regularly. A good share of our work is cars that have already been somewhere else, including dealers, and still are not right. Bring what documentation you have.
Aircooled, classic and specialist work
Do you still work on aircooled Volkswagens?
Yes, continuously since 1978. Beetles, Buses, Karmann Ghias, Type 3s and Things, including full engine rebuilds, carburetor and fuel system work, heater channels, transaxles and ground-up restorations. More on our aircooled work.
Do air-cooled Porsches need a specific oil?

What kind of oil should I use in my German car?
German cars require a high-quality synthetic oil that meets the manufacturer's specifications. You should always consult your owner's manual or a qualified mechanic to determine the best type of oil for your specific make and model.
Do you do restoration work, or only repairs?
Both. Alongside routine service and diagnostics we take on ground-up restorations and custom rebuilds, including aircooled Volkswagen and Porsche engine work.
Can you inspect a car before I buy it?
Yes. Pre-purchase inspections are one of our specialties, particularly on Porsche. We put the car on the lift, pull codes, look for accident repair and go through the service history so you know what you are actually buying. It is a short appointment that regularly saves people a great deal of money.
My car has been in storage. What should I have checked?
Cars that sit want attention before they go back into regular use: fluids, brakes, tyres, fuel system and seals. An inspection before a seasonal drive or a long trip catches the things that develop quietly while a car is parked.

Where can I find German auto repair near me in Portland?
We are on SE Stark Street at 148th, which is an easy run from I-84, I-205 and Powell. Customers come to us from across east Portland — Montavilla, Hazelwood, Powellhurst, Mill Park, Parkrose, Centennial and Lents — as well as the west and north sides.
Do you serve Gresham, Clackamas and Happy Valley?
Yes. We sit close enough to the city line that Gresham customers treat us as their local shop, and Clackamas and Happy Valley are a straight run down 122nd or I-205. We also see regular customers from Milwaukie, Troutdale, Fairview, Wood Village, Oregon City, Damascus and Sandy.
I am further out — is it worth the drive?
People come from Hood River, the Gorge, Vancouver and the west side, usually because the work is specialised or nobody closer will take it on. Call ahead and we will try to group the work so one trip does it. More on the areas we serve.
Merch and the shop itself
Can I buy merch online?
Not at the moment. Online purchasing is currently unavailable — pick up and pay in the shop, or call us and we will set items aside for you.
Is there anything to do while I wait?
There is a saltwater fish tank and a good number of plants in the waiting area, which customers mention more often than you would expect.
